Free Chrome extension for screenshots, screen recording and annotation

Ekly Capture is a free Chrome extension that lets you capture, annotate, and share anything in your browser without switching between tools. Take a screenshot of the visible area, capture an entire scrolling page, draw a region around a specific element, or record your screen as an MP4 video. Every capture opens immediately in the built-in annotator where you can add arrows, text labels, boxes, highlights, and blur sensitive information before saving or sharing.

Ekly Capture works in Chrome and any Chromium-based browser including Edge, Brave, and Arc. No account is needed to capture and save locally. A free account unlocks cloud save, shareable links, and access to your capture library from any device.

Full page screenshot tool for Chrome

Taking a screenshot of the visible area of a webpage is straightforward on any device. Capturing the entire page, including everything below the fold, requires a different approach. Ekly Capture handles this automatically. Click Full Page in the capture menu and the extension scrolls through the entire page, captures each section at full resolution, and stitches all frames into a single tall PNG image. Sticky navigation elements appear once at the top and are suppressed from subsequent frames so they do not repeat throughout the image.

Full page screenshots are useful for documenting an entire webpage for review, archiving content for reference, sharing a complete design or layout for feedback, and reporting bugs that span multiple sections of a page. The output is a single PNG at the full resolution of the page with no visible seams between frames.

Region select screenshot

The region select tool lets you draw a rectangle over any area of the page and capture only that area. Click Region Select in the capture menu, draw the selection with your cursor, and release to capture. The selected area opens in the annotator immediately. This is useful when you need to capture a specific chart, a particular component in a design, a section of a form, or any bounded area without capturing the surrounding content.

Delayed screenshot capture

Some content only appears when you interact with the page, such as dropdown menus, tooltips, hover states, and modal dialogs. Capturing these with a standard screenshot is difficult because clicking the capture button often dismisses the element. The delayed capture option lets you set a timer of 3 or 5 seconds before the screenshot fires. Activate the capture, trigger the hover state or open the menu, and the screenshot fires automatically when the timer expires. This makes it straightforward to document interactive states that would otherwise be impossible to capture.

Screenshot annotation tools

Every screenshot captured with Ekly Capture opens in the built-in annotation editor before saving. The editor includes arrows for pointing to specific elements, rectangles for highlighting sections, text labels for adding context, a highlighter for drawing attention to important areas, a blur tool for redacting sensitive information, and a crop tool for trimming the image before sharing. All annotation tools are available on the free plan with no account required for local save.

The blur tool is particularly useful when sharing screenshots in professional contexts where the image contains personal information, financial data, email addresses, passwords, or other content that should not be visible to the recipient. Draw a rectangle over any area and apply a blur effect that makes the content unreadable without distorting the surrounding image.

Screen recorder for Chrome

Ekly Capture includes a screen recorder that captures video of your screen directly from Chrome as an MP4 file. Screen recordings are useful for demonstrating a bug to a developer, walking through a workflow for a colleague, recording a tutorial or product demo, providing visual feedback on a design or prototype, and creating asynchronous video updates for remote teams.

When you start a recording, Chrome asks you to choose what to capture: your entire screen, a specific application window, or a specific browser tab. Select your preferred option and recording begins immediately. When you are done, click Stop in the Ekly Capture popup. The recording is processed and converted to MP4 format automatically. MP4 recordings play on every device including iPhone and iPad without requiring any additional software or codec.

Screen and camera recording

The camera overlay option lets you record your screen with a picture-in-picture view of your webcam in the corner. This is commonly used for tutorial recordings where having a visible presenter adds context, product walkthroughs where facial expressions and reactions help communicate enthusiasm or concern, and any recording where being seen as well as heard improves the communication. The camera feed appears as a small overlay in the corner of the recording and does not obscure the main screen content.

Share screenshots and recordings with a link

After annotating a screenshot or finishing a recording, click Save to cloud to upload the capture and receive a shareable link. The link follows the format ekly.app/s/your-slug and can be opened by anyone in a browser without installing anything or creating an account. The link is automatically copied to your clipboard when the upload completes so you can paste it immediately into a message, email, Slack channel, GitHub issue, or anywhere else.

Sharing via link eliminates the friction of attaching files to messages, waiting for large uploads to email servers, and managing attachment sizes. A recipient who clicks the link sees the screenshot or recording immediately in their browser at full resolution.

Who uses Ekly Capture

Software developers use Ekly Capture to document bugs with annotated screenshots and to record reproduction steps as short screen recordings for bug reports. Designers use it to share work-in-progress screenshots for feedback and to capture inspiration from websites they are browsing. Customer support teams use it to record walkthroughs that show customers how to complete tasks. Product managers use it to annotate wireframes and mockups with comments before sharing for review. Remote teams use it to share context asynchronously without scheduling a call. Freelancers and consultants use it to document deliverables and share progress updates with clients.
